Hiero II was a tyrant who ruled over Syrakousai from -275 to -262. During his tenure, he faced significant military challenges, including the First Punic War (264-241) and the Mercenary War (241-238). The First Punic War, which began shortly after Hiero II assumed power, was a conflict between Rome and Carthage over control of Sicily. Hiero II initially supported Carthage but later switched sides to ally with Rome, securing his position as ruler. The Mercenary War, which occurred towards the end of his reign, was a revolt by unpaid Carthaginian mercenaries that threatened the stability of Sicily. Hiero II successfully navigated these conflicts, ensuring the continued dominance of Syrakousai.
